What Are Leased Lines?

Is your business reliant on a fast and dependent internet connection? Chances are high, that your answer to this is yes.
Have you been feeling the effects of the last year’s pressure on the network, it might be time to consider a Leased Line for your business.
But what exactly are leased lines? How do they work? And what are the benefits?
Let’s have a look.

What Are Leased Lines?

A Leased Line is a dedicated data connection with fixed bandwidth, delivered straight into your building. If your business has high data usage, it will allow you to have a high quality, uncontended and always reliable internet connection. A Leased Line provides guaranteed up-time, and equal up-and download speeds, whenever you need it.
The connectivity line is ‘leased’, in the way that the connection is rented by the Internet Service Provider (also called ISP) directly into your business.
Because the line goes straight into your building and is dedicated for your business use only – you can get high-quality internet above and beyond what you will receive from any other connection.
Bottom line?
Your business simply won’t get any better connectivity than from a Leased Line.

What are the characteristics of a leased line?

By definition a Leased Line is uncontended, making it for your business’ exclusive use. As the ‘king of connectivity’ the exclusivity means that you and your business will never have to compromise.

Sounds good, right?

A Leased Line will always be symmetrical, which means upload and download speed are the same. This results in high speed connectivity, no matter what you use the data for.

On the other hand, traditional Broadband such as FTTC & FTTP, is asymmetrical. Therefore you will for those connections often see that download speeds are much faster than upload speeds.

Do you upload a lot of data in your day to day operations? Then a Leased Line will be the right choice for you.

No matter what you use your connectivity for, you will see huge benefits from a Leased Line. It is a connectivity solution created for the modern business or office space.

Do your business use Cloud Services, or VoIP based telephony? Then you will need the fast and reliable line which only a Leased Line can give you.

How does a leased line work?

A Leased Line uses the same technology as the standard fibre optic broadband does.
Inside the cable pulses of light are being sent down the connection, and this light transmits into data at the end of it.
Basically, the one end of the light will turn the lights on, and send it down the connection, where it then will be recognised and transferred into data in the other end.

How fast can a leased line get?

The light pulses in a Leased Line travel with the speed of light (literally the speed of light) making it impossible to go any faster.

So, the speeds you can get are seriously fast!

Depending on your needs, your line can deliver speeds all the way up to 10Gbps (Gigabits per second).

Now THAT is fast!

Because the line is uncontended you can match your needs perfectly with the line you choose. Ultimately, you have the ability to match your requirements for capacity with your budget, to make sure you get the best option available.

No matter what you do, you won’t ever have to share with other users. Finally, the speed won’t ever fluctuate because of other users, giving you the assurance of high-quality connectivity whenever YOU need it.

How do I know what speed I need?

When you get a quote for a Leased Line it will look something like this: 50/100. These two numbers describe the speed that will be available on your line.

The first number (here 50) is the speed of the line. The second number (here 100) is the bearer line. The bearer line represents the maximum speed your line can get up to. This is useful if your needs will change in the future, as you will have the flexibility to do a simple upgrade.

In the given example 50/100, the user will get speeds of 50Mbps (megabits per second). But, the bearer line itself can go up to 100 Mbps, allowing the user to double its speed on the same line, should it be needed. Most small or medium sized businesses will be able to do with a line going up to 1Gbps. However, speeds all the way up to 10 Gbps are also available.

Do I need a leased line?

Depending on the industry your business belongs to, chances are high that you would benefit from a Leased Line. The need for connectivity has risen dramatically during this last year, putting huge pressure on the connectivity network. This has resulted in slower internet speeds which are not sustainable for many businesses.

With a Leased Line your business won’t be affected by how much other users rely on it. This will give you the ability to perform within your business, without any disruption.

Connectivity is an essential part of any business infrastructure. The quality of your connectivity provides the base for how all your other technology performs. Especially, if your business relies on Cloud-based telephony such as VoIP systems, a reliable line becomes essential for dependable communication.
Finally, having a high-quality connectivity line also gives you high-quality service. Leased Lines come with priority SLAs, so you can make sure that your business continuity plans are in place, should anything happen.
