The Cystic Fibrosis Trust is Our Chosen Charity for This Year

After last year’s success with Cherry Lodge Cancer Care, our charity committee has selected a new cause to fundraise for on behalf of everyone here at Redsquid.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic condition affecting more than 10,400 people in the UK. Having CF means experiencing a build-up of thick, sticky mucus in the lungs, which can cause an increasing difficulty breathing and create a perfect environment for harmful bacteria. This mucus also affects the digestive system and other organs throughout the body, causing extra complications like difficulty absorbing nutrients, liver disease and CF-related diabetes.

Living with CF often requires taking handfuls of medication and undergoing a complicated treatment regime for hours every day. Moreover, people with CF cannot meet each other due to the risks of sharing dangerous bugs, something called cross-infection, because of this, CF can be an incredibly isolating condition as well.

We learnt all of this and more during a staff-wide presentation last month, wherein a representative from the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, the UK’s only charity dedicated to fighting for a life unlimited with cystic fibrosis, came into the office to talk about the condition and the work they do. The charity primarily focuses on raising awareness of the condition, as well as fundraising to support ground-breaking research, produce vital information and support services, promote exceptional clinical care and campaign for access to life-changing precision medicines. Their presentation to the staff was incredibly moving, with one particular account of a young lady losing her life to the condition at just 18 years old bringing many of us to tears.

Our charity committee were equally moved, with our charity Chairperson, Amy Deegan, explaining:

“We’d already been able to build a fantastic relationship with the Trust, thanks to them being one of our long-term customers. But it was really their incredibly emotional presentation about the effects of CF on people’s lives, that convinced us to choose them as our charity of 2019.”

We also asked Ellie Notley, Head of Corporate Partnerships at Cystic Fibrosis Trust, how she felt about partnering with Redsquid:

“We are very excited to have been selected as Redsquid’s Charity of the Year 2019 and are really looking forward to working with them to raise funds to improve the lives of people with cystic fibrosis not only in the here and now but in the future too.”

We look forward to seeing what events our charity committee have planned for this year, and we’ll be sure to provide them with support for their activities throughout 2019.
