Chelsey gives her advice to young women starting their careers. Read about how she believes women can accomplish everything they want and how important it is for all of us to bring each other up! Top advice? Be strong, confident and keep going!
What does this year’s International Women's Days slogan #ChooseToChallenge mean for you in your work life?
For me it is an influence to go and find something that is different to what you are doing, or what you want to do as an individual. For women it obviously represents that we now have the choice to challenge ourselves to become just the person we want to be.
In my work life it is a part of my role to both challenge myself but also to challenge others. In that way, the mentality ‘to challenge’ influences my day to day operations and is always something I encourage.
How have you chosen to challenge yourself in your career?
In terms of my own challenge, I have had continuous development throughout my career. These challenges have brought me to the next step up in my role. I have been doing different qualifications to better myself and my skill set, and this have made me capable of doing my role as it is now. This past year has been highly challenging for all of us, and affected our lives making both distant learning and working a new challenging task.
I have always preferred ‘learning by doing’, and growing alongside my role. I started in the organisation as a PA, so yes, I have challenged myself to where I am today, both in my day to day operations, but also in which direction the role should take me with the support of the business.
As HR Manager- what do you think is important for women when thinking about their next career move?
No matter what you do in life, you always need to go for the things that will make you happy. When looking for, or starting ones career, go for something you are interested in and which will bring the best out in you! Then, you will always be able to grow with your role as you develop and challenge yourself to acquire new skills.
Based on your own experience - what advice would you give to women pursuing a career in your field?
Be comfortable in making unpopular decisions, while being open minded and capable of seeing things from other parts view .
Although it can be difficult it is important to stay objective to come to the best results. I always find it good to just put yourself out there and get the experience you need to grow with the role.
And finally you should always be confident and comfortable in what you are doing, as you will have to be able to support and guide team members in the right direction.
How important do you believe it is for women to lift each other up, and what does it mean to you?
It is very important, no matter what gender you are! Everyone feels better with a little support.
It makes such a difference to a life when you have a go-to person. In a workplace I find that it even comes down to having someone to bounce ideas off with. We all need to support each other and help make each other better. This is something that can always improve and definitely not something that happens enough. It often comes down to not being aware when people need the lift- so for me it means knowing what team members need, without them even mentioning it- to be able to always be there as their go to person and provide all the support that they need.
On International Women's Day, do you have a message you would like to pass on to young women thinking about their career?
Be strong, confident and keep going.
For young women it is a difficult time as it is, so just be sure that you are always good enough and you can do it! Young careers will always have set backs, so just be open minded and take in all the guidance you can get to keep bettering your self- cause you can be sure that you can do it!
